What happens in a voice lesson?

Typically, a lesson starts with a few minutes of conversation about what the student worked on since the last lesson and/or what the student or teacher is hoping to accomplish in the current lesson. It's then followed by a series of vocal warm-ups, usually a form of breathing exercises and musical scales tailored to what is needed for the student's personal vocal needs. After that, it's getting down to business on whatever the student is working on. That may include singing through and working on various songs, teaching notes and rhythms, acting and performance techniques, or a variety of other things like speech and sound projection. Each lesson is personally tailored to the student, whether they are looking to be a better singer for a school or church choir, an upcoming performance, audition or competition or just to have fun.

Lessons are meant to help you become a better musician, strengthen your voice and become a great performer. However, it's also necessary for them to be enjoyable and fun if you truly want to make good music.

What is your teaching style?

I try and teach a well-rounded approach to singing, which includes an understanding of the body and how sound is produced, musicianship, acting, and most importantly, self confidence. I strive to teach each individual how to find their own voice.

Singing is a full-body experience- your body is your instrument, and some people may be surprised at how most muscles in your body contribute to how well you sing. Vocal warm-ups are literally warming up various muscles in your chest, throat, neck, face and head, as well as trying to relax  or create tension in various muscles throughout your body. Not only that, but musical expression also comes through the body through facial expression, acting and mental confidence. All of these things are incredibly important to becoming a great performer.

I believe that a truly good singer can sing well in just about any style, and while I specialize in classical music and musical theater, I have been teaching students of all ages for over 20 years and can help find the right sound for whatever kind of music you may be interested in. If you want to stand out at karaoke night, I can help you with that just as well as I may help someone else preparing a role for an opera. It all takes practice and commitment, and a willingness to have fun even when it gets hard!
